Food Connect: Feeding Those in Need in Philadelphia

Food Connect is a Philadelphia based organization that is bridging the gap between surplus food and hunger. The process is simple, donors of excess food schedule a pickup and a Food Connect car comes to pick up the food. Then the food is donated to local shelters where it will be eaten the same day or the next. Food Connect is easily accessible through their website as well as apple and android apps.

Their organization aims to make use of the 40% of food in the U.S. that goes uneaten by giving it to those in need. In Philadelphia, 1 in 4 people live in poverty and are food insecure. During Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia, restaurants saw a significant amount of food go to waste when people could not access their restaurant. Some restaurants were able to connect with food donation organizations but it was difficult and last minute. Food Connect was able to preemptively ease the difficulty of donating unused food to shelters during the Democratic National Convention. Food Connect partners with major shelters and organizations in Philadelphia that distribute food. They were able to pick up and deliver the food making it easier and more appealing for restaurants and events to donate food.

During the 8 days of the DNC, Food Connect collected over 5 tons of food! This success has prompted them to continue their efforts in Philadelphia.
