FireEye: Securing the World Against Cyber Attacks

On Monday, we had a great start to our Villanova in the Valley experience as we visited FireEye.  FireEye is a leading cyber security company that identifies and blocks cyber threats in real-time.  Its customers include the U.S. Government and Villanova.  We met with Dave DeWalt, FireEye’s CEO and the Chairman of its Board of Directors.  Mr. DeWalt shared with us the exciting work FireEye is doing and also provided us with valuable career advice.  We have all read stories about data breaches and hacking into the records of large companies like Sony and Target as well as various banks, financial institutions, insurers and even the government.  These entities face a daily threat of cyber espionage where outsiders are attempting to wrongfully access their information.   The threat comes not just from computer hackers but now even foreign governments are attempting to wrongfully gain access to sensitive or proprietary information.  FireEye is at the forefront of identifying and blocking these threats.  FireEye has created a virtual machine-based platform that provides state-of-the-art security offerings to protect against cyber attacks that is different from traditional antivirus software or firewalls.

Mr. DeWalt also shared with us valuable career advice.  He has had a decorated career.  Before joining FireEye, he was President, Chief Executive Officer, and Director of McAfee, Inc.  McAfee was acquired by Intel Corporation.  Before McAfee, he held various positions at EMC Corporation and Documentum.  He has also served on the board of directors of Delta Air Lines, Inc., Polycom, Inc., and Jive Software, Inc.  He holds a B.S. in computer science and electrical engineering from the University of Delaware.  He shared with us that upon graduating from college, he packed up his car and traveled to Silicon Valley.  It was a complete shot in the dark and he didn’t even have a job.  He was able to work his way up in the industry to the position of CEO through what he called the “Four H’s” — humility, honesty, hard work, and hunger.  We also learned that Mr. DeWalt was destined to lead from a young age.  He broke three Guinness World Records while he was young and he credits his drive to excel for his career success.

Mr. DeWalt’s passion for the work FireEye is doing was evident.  He truly loves what he does.  Having this type of leadership at the forefront of his company is incredibly important.  He recognizes the importance FireEye has in combating the growing threat of cyber espionage.  Cyber security is critical to allow companies to protect their most sensitive and proprietary information.  We were fortunate to see what one of the leaders in the field of cyber security is doing to change how companies protect themselves from this serious threat.  It was an awesome way to start our week and I can’t wait to see what else we will learn this week!
