The Elevator Pitched Career

IMG_0764As a confused undergraduate, I have a few “what do I want to do with my life” moments occasionally. I have a broad science major that doesn’t have a set in stone career path, and I’m still figuring out what to do with it. People always say that you’ll bounce around to a ton of different jobs before you find the one that’s right for you, but I don’t want that. I just want to have the job of my dreams and completely bypass the steps in between. I know that this is unrealistic, but I can’t help thinking about it. Have you ever taken a “this is what your career should be” quiz online? I have. My perfect career choice does not exist. In a world where what we want to do is non-existent, the only logical solution is to create it. Enter: the StartUp Opportunity Fair.

On February 19th Villanova hosted a career fair. Though that may seem ordinary, this one was filled with companies that were trying to impress us as much as we were them. Starting with a 90 second pitch about the founder’s new company and what it is designed to achieve, the companies than waited out in the lobby for eager students to chat them up. The amazing thing about this StartUp Opportunity Fair is that it was filled with people that were in our shoes just a few years ago: frustrated that what they were passionate about did not have a job market. The StartUp Fair was a resource to the world outside the classroom of cookie cutter majors. It allowed the opportunity to speak with fresh minds, and think about the applications that the classes we take could have in the real world.

Even though I didn’t find a company that spoke to my specific passions, I met a bunch of interesting and intelligent people. It allowed me to think about a different way to approach searching for a career, or taking the next step and creating our own. The StartUp Fair introduced us to a world of people developing a company that perfectly answers the elementary question of what you want to be when you grow up. Instead of settling, build it.

Special thanks to The Ideas x Innovation Network, Villanova ICE, Beyond Ideas, and the Villanova Career Center for sponsoring this event.
